Average ring size for women and men
What jewellers most commonly sell, in US, UK and EU sizes with the millimetres behind each one — and why that average is a starting point for a gift guess, never a substitute for measuring the finger that will wear the ring.
The averages at a glance
| Group | Most common US | Typical range (US) | UK (approx.) | EU |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Women | 6–7 (most sold: 6) | 5–8 | L–P | 50–57 |
| Men | 9–10 (most sold: 9 or 10) | 8–12 | R–T | 59–62 |
UK letters are approximate here because published UK charts disagree by a half-letter in places; EU numbers are the circumference in millimetres, rounded. The tables below give the exact millimetres for every size in the common ranges, from this site's chart data.

Why the average is a weak measurement
- Hands vary more than the average suggests: a petite woman and a tall woman can differ by three full sizes, both perfectly normal.
- Fingers change size through the day and with temperature, so even a correct average for a person is wrong at the wrong hour.
- Wide bands fit tighter than thin bands at the same measurement, so the same finger needs a larger size for a wide wedding band.
- Left and right hands differ, and every finger differs — an average for the ring finger says nothing about the middle finger.
- Ordering averages are also skewed by gifting: the most sold size is not necessarily the most worn size.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average ring size for women? Around US 6–7, with US 6 the most commonly sold single size. Most women fall between US 5 and 8. In UK letters that is roughly L–P, and in EU sizes roughly 50–57.
What is the average ring size for men? Around US 9–10, with US 9 or 10 the most commonly sold. Most men fall between US 8 and 12. In UK letters that is roughly R–T, and in EU sizes roughly 59–62.
Can I order a ring using only the average size? Only as a guess for a resizable ring with a free exchange. An average is not a measurement: hands vary far more than the average suggests, and a ring half a size out is noticeably uncomfortable. For an expensive or un-resizable ring, measure the finger or a ring that fits it.
Limitations
No published study of ring-size distribution was found for this page, so no percentage or population claim is made here. The ranges above are the ranges published jeweller guides agree on; individual guides differ by half a size at the edges (some put the women's average at 6, others at 6.5 or 7). If the ring cannot be resized, do not order on an average — measure the finger or the ring that fits it.
