Wedding band sizing
A wedding band is the ring most likely to be worn every day, for years, in all seasons — which makes its sizing different from a ring worn occasionally. Width, comfort fit, and fitting alongside an existing ring all matter more here than for a single occasional ring.
What makes wedding-band sizing different
Daily wear, all seasons
An occasional ring can be a little tight in summer or loose in winter without mattering much. A daily band cannot: it must be comfortable in both. Size from an evening measurement in the warmer season where possible, and accept a fit that is comfortable across the range rather than perfect on one day.
Often wide, often comfort-fit
Wedding bands are commonly 4–8 mm wide, and commonly comfort-fit. Those two tendencies pull in opposite directions (width up, dome down — see the wide-band and comfort-fit guides). Do not apply both adjustments blindly; try the actual band, or order from a seller with free exchanges.
Worn with another ring
Two bands together occupy more of the finger and feel tighter than either alone, especially if both are wide. When a wedding band will sit next to an engagement ring, fit them together: try both on at once, in the order they will be worn, before deciding the band's size.
Practical steps
- Measure in the intended width. If you can, try sizer rings in the width you intend to buy — a jeweller's sizer set usually includes widths. A measurement taken with a thin sizer and applied to an 8 mm band needs the width adjustment; a measurement taken with an 8 mm sizer does not.
- Try the pair together. Put the engagement ring on first, then the band, in the order they will be worn. Check knuckle passage for the pair (two bands together are harder to pass than one) and base fit for the pair (tighter than either alone).
- Leave resizing room in the plan. Fingers change over years. A plain band can usually be resized by a size or so in either direction; a patterned or eternity band often cannot. Factor that into the design choice, not just the size choice.
- Do not order both partners' bands from one measurement. Each person's finger is measured separately, in the evening, in the intended width. A shared "we are both a 7" is a coincidence if it happens, not a plan.
Limitations
Wedding bands vary enormously in width, profile and metal, and sellers' sizing advice varies with them. This guide gives the factors to weigh; the seller of the specific band you choose has the final word on its fit, and a fitting in the actual band is the most reliable answer for an expensive one.
