Measure Ring Size

Pinky ring sizing

The pinky is the smallest finger, the most tapered, and the one most often sized by guesswork from another finger — which is exactly why it deserves its own method. Measure the pinky itself, on the hand that will wear the ring.

Note: Measure the pinky finger directly, at its base, in the evening, with a flexible tape or a strip — and check the knuckle, which on the pinky is often proportionally prominent. Do not scale down a ring-finger size: pinky sizes do not follow a fixed offset from any other finger.

Why the pinky is different

Tapered shape

The pinky narrows more from knuckle to base than other fingers, relative to its size. A ring sized only for the base may not pass the knuckle; a ring sized only for the knuckle may spin freely at the base. Measure both, as the knuckle guide explains, and expect a gap.

More temperature-sensitive feel

Small fingers show temperature change more noticeably: a 1 mm change is a larger share of a pinky's circumference than of a ring finger's. Measure in the evening at normal temperature, and expect the pinky ring to feel looser in winter cold than other rings do.

Often a signet, often top-heavy

Pinky rings are frequently signets with a flat face, which makes them top-heavy and prone to spinning. A snugger fit than usual — or a sizing aid — is often needed to keep the face upright, which is a fit decision, not a size error.

How to measure a pinky

  • Use the pinky, on the correct hand. Left and right pinkies differ, like all fingers. Measure the one that will wear the ring.
  • Tape or strip, not a scaled guess. Wrap a flexible tape around the base, read the circumference in millimetres, and convert it. Worked example: a pinky circumference of 44.2 mm is US 3 (diameter 14.07 mm); 47.0 mm is between US 4 (46.7 mm) and US 4.5 (48.0 mm) — closer to US 4, and the between-sizes guide applies.
  • Check the knuckle separately. If the knuckle circumference is larger, size for the knuckle and accept some spinning at the base, or ask a jeweller about sizing beads.
  • Try it on before committing, if you can. Pinky fit is the most sensitive to small errors, and a sizer set in a shop resolves in a minute what home measurement resolves in three attempts.

Limitations

Pinky sizes below the site's chart range (under US 3) exist in the market but are outside the site's dataset, so this guide gives method, not a table row, for those sizes. For a pinky ring below US 3, use the seller's chart with your millimetre circumference — the number, not the label, is what travels.
